Hey San Antonio,
Today is the last real “holiday” of the holiday season – Super Bowl Sunday. A lot of people are able to convince themselves that the holidays aren’t a good time to get their fitness program up and running because all of the distractions. And then the New Year comes and they decide “well, the Super Bowl will be here in a few weeks, so why start now?” Of course, we have the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo starting this week, so there’s another built in excuses.
There are 2 types of people in this world: those who let their bodies control them and those who control their bodies. The first types are easy to spot: usually have a gut, get tired easy, succumb to lazy activities like happy hour 4-5 nights per week, shy away from anything physical or anything remotely healthy and usually have a negative comment geared toward anyone that mentions working out, eating healthy or anything else similar. I think most people fall into this – mysa.com reported yesterday that there was an “alarming increase in obesity in Bexar County in 2008″ – ALARMING? Hardly.
The latter, people that control their bodies are also easy to spot. The mind and body are the hardest things to control, and it seems that their discipline spills over into other parts of their life. They get more done in less time. They’re awake and alert. They’re active. When someone makes a comment about “I’d rather LIVE my life and eat what I want” they smile and don’t say a word… Oh yeah, they don’t get nervous about pool parties, weekends at the lake, tube trips down the Guadalupe or Comal, or company picnics where shorts are going to be worn (who wants to hide behind pants in 100 degree South Texas weather in the dead of summer?)
Whether you are in control or controlled is completely up to you. The change doesn’t happen over night and is not easy. It takes the determination and willpower to say “I’m going to do this no matter what it takes”. You’ll find out a lot about yourself, and there will be challenges, hardships and you will take the occasional step back. But don’t keep going back – focus on forward progress each and every day. Then in a few weeks, you’ll look back on your journey and be shocked at how far you’ve come.
April 1 will be here in 8 weeks… Memorial Day in about 15 – that’s the official start of summer. There isn’t a person on earth that can’t drastically change their body in 15 weeks. Don’t put it off.
